t’s
true: Good and even great things do come in small packages. This is even
truer with SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM. The basic building blocks are the
songs, in this case the lyrics, and the music from Broadway shows by the
brilliant Stephen Sondheim.
The dazzling array of Sondheim’s best-known songs from: WEST SIDE STORY,
GYPSY, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, COMPANY, FOLLIES,
ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, PACIFIC OVERTURES, and DO I HEAR A WALTZ and more
obscure works such as “Evening Primrose” (a TV show),
“The
7% Solution”, and “The Mad Show” are (if possible) even more impressive
than when heard in the shows for which they were written. If there was
any doubt that Stephen Sondheim is the greatest talent writing
contemporary musicals, this show erases it. |
